The “Building a Community Without Drugs” Coalition serves the City of Westminster and Adams County School District 50. The goals of the program are to (1) Reduce substance abuse among youth and, over time, among adults and (2) to strengthen the coalition capacity and collaboration. To achieve the goals, the coalition will continue to refine and carry out the following strategies: Address identified risk factors for youth and increase protective factors through: increased knowledge of harmfulness of drug use, youth development through access to pro-social opportunities, learn and practice leadership skills for a healthy lifestyle for themselves and influencing peers. 2) Increase protective factors within the family through increased knowledge of the harmfulness of drugs by parents, increased parental skills and bonding opportunities with children and youth through community. 3) Increase awareness and disapproval of underage alcohol use by developing a multifaceted strategy to address this drug of choice. 4) Increase capacity, collaboration, communication, training and participation of coalition members and volunteers.This program will enable this community to conduct research-based prevention planning by providing accurate and timely information regarding state-of-the-art practices and initiatives that have proven to be effective in reducing substance abuse among youth.
